Nina Pancheva-Kirkova’s doctoral research centres around a practice in painting, focused upon issues of nostalgia towards Socialist Realism. In this post she reports upon a paper she gave at the Euroacademia conference, Re(inventing) Eastern Europe. As part of my practice based research on contemporary fine art in Bulgaria and its relations to our totalitarian past, I had the opportunity to take part in two of the conferences organized by Euroacademia, an experience which proved to be valuable for the development of my research project as it allowed me to share my work with other researchers, to receive helpful feedback and to obtain up-to-date information directly relevant to my work. Constructing New Identities: Images of Socialist Realism and Contemporary Fine Art in Post-Communist Bulgaria Abstract: The fall of the communist regime in Bulgaria witnessed the end of a grand recit, a metanarrative (Lyotard, 1984) that claimed total knowledge of human history, politics and economy. Socialist Realism, as an aesthetic that supposedly embodies this metanarrative, articulated its pretension as the authentic art form that defined relations in the artworld of the country. The images of Socialist Realism formed a framework of propositions for ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ in fine art in an attempt to construct a collective artistic identity. The second interpration of the Ilya Kabakov - The Toilets: Obsene Homes classification is the Kabakov’s work as an attempt for a creation of a communist collective. As S. Boym claims, through his installations, signed as they were made by different people “he turns himself into a kind of ideal communist collective, made up of his own embarrassed alter-egos - the characters from whose points of view he tells his many stories and to whom he ascribes their authorship. The art of Ilya Kabakov is really complex and multilayered, consisted of wide range forms and materials, which vary from drawings to installations. Until 1988 he worked in the Soviet Union and was one of the most important members of the unofficial art. After the collapse of communism his works have been exhibited in galleries and museums all over the USA and Europe. The artist has participated in many important group surveys including Documenta IX (in 1992) and the Venice Biennale (in 1993). What is the relation between Kabakov’s work and Socialist utopian ideas?

Words are often used as a part of images in art. Relationship between text and image has long history since Aristotle discussed the connection between poetry and painting.
Words and their relation to reality and art are important part of Rene Magritte’s paintings.
